#1 The Law of The Lid

From the book “The 21 Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell

#1 The Law of the Lid

Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness

If you master this law you will see an incredible impact of leadership on every aspect of your life.

EXAMPLE

If your Leadership Rating is an 8, your effectiveness can never be greater than 7…

If your Leadership Rating is a 4, your effectiveness can never be greater than 3…

Your leadership ability - for better or worse - always determines your effectiveness and the potential impact of your organization.

The higher you want to climb, the greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be.

Success without leadership - this is when one’s dedication to success is high and their leadership ability is also low.   In this example, one can be extremely effective at what you do yet they are incapable of true leadership success due to their low ability to lead.

Success with leadership - this is when one’s dedication to success is matched by their leadership ability.  Leadership has a multiplying effect.  If you can raise your leadership ability to an 8 and match your success dedication to an 8 - your overall effectiveness increases exponentially.

Personal and organizational effectiveness is proportionate to the strength of leadership.  If leadership in an organization is strong, the lid is high.  If leadership in an organization is low, the lid is limited.

You can find smart, talented, successful people who are able to go only so far because of the limitations of their leadership.
